How to Save Money on Your Back-to-School Shopping

back to school

Whether you’ve got two kids in high school or you’re feeling nervous about sending your little one for their first year at primary, you’re probably already aware that back-to-school shopping can be a pricey business.

We’re talking about “no spare cash until payday” expensive, depending on how many children you have.

In fact, a 2017 poll found that parents were due to spend around £175 per child last summer to get them ready for the new term. That’s an unbelievable £1.48 billion across the UK.

One of the most stressful mistakes a parent can make when sending a child to school for the first time, is waiting until the end of the summer to start shopping for uniform.

When the kids break up, some of us are thinking about activities to keep them busy for the six weeks looming ahead, not preparing them for the first term back. Unluckily, many mums and dads (those who’ve trawled through back-to-school sales in the past!) start their shopping early on.

It isn’t worth the stress of rushing around in late August; panicking and hauling littles ones through the shops when the weather is great – especially not when our back-to-school offers are already here!

On the other hand, buying any earlier could lead to bargain pieces being too small come September – B2S is definitely not an exact shopping science.

To make things easier, we’ve pulled out all the stops to bring you cheap school uniforms for girls and boys – alongside all of the other bits and pieces they need, and with our signature Peacocks quality.

Then the mums and dads at Peacocks put their heads together to drum up our tried-and-tested advice for getting your shopping done.

Make a budget BEFORE you start shopping and let the kids muck in too!

Maybe it’s an obvious one on paper, but ticking things off a list is a great way to avoid overspending, forgetting your must-haves and caving when your little ones beg for something non-essential that will make this their most fashionable year yet.

Also, ticking things off a list is just super satisfying.

Next, get your budget sorted and share it with the kids – this can help them to learn about the value of money and understand why they can’t always have everything!

Find out which pieces you HAVE to buy from the school’s supplier

It’s pretty much inevitable that you’ll have to get the odd piece of your child’s uniform from the school supplier. Whether that’s a branded jumper and a tie or the whole lot, you can save yourself a whole load of headaches if you check with the school first.

In our experience, you can’t guarantee the school will let you off just because you already bought something they consider unsuitable. At least it’s all done with good intentions, to make sure no kid feels like the odd one out!

Keep an eye on the trends and shop strategically

It can be so tempting to buy your little ones whatever they want – because who doesn’t want their child to feel like the coolest kid in school?

Take a breath before you decide and do a bit of research into the trends that your kids keep talking about. If it’s been around for a while – like unicorn designs – you might feel a bit more confident that it’ll last the schoolyear.

Either way, we’d recommend centering your big purchases around quality products that do the job and won’t quickly become outdated on the school yard, such as parka coats.
