The gingham edit: how to wear

The gingham edit: how to wear

Before SS17, what did gingham material make you think of? For us, it gave out a childlike, innocent vibe thanks to characters like Heidi, and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. That, or Americano culture – country singers and sexy cowgirls wearing checked shirts and Daisy Dukes.

Not to say that the checked fabric hasn’t debuted in a fashionable girl’s wardrobe in the past. In their heydays, the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot gave gingham a flirty sex appeal with their mark of approval, meaning that it was reworked quite a few times during the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, and popped up again at some points in the noughties – most notably on the fashionably-informed back of Anna Wintour.

In 2017, spring/summer has reclaimed this versatile textile with a host of tailored dresses and trousers, ruffled tops and sophisticated Bardot detailing. You just need to know how to wear it for the season – enter Peacocks!

Starlet in the sun

Swimwear is the ideal place to start when you’re injecting a little Old Hollywood glamour into your wardrobe – after all, the pin-up bikini shots of our favourite starlets are iconic. The classic halter style is updated here with a low rise bikini bottom, while the pastel gingham and pure white kaftan just sing 1950s soft femininity. Round metallic sunglasses, drop earrings and a bejewelled sandal will add that red carpet appeal and finish off your ensemble for a beach babe photo opp.

Practically perfect for every garden party

Our personal fave in the collection, this bow-front gingham dress is prim and pretty so it pairs perfectly with a traditional blue bandana. Keep your look simple and tonal with shades of pastel blue or update with an orange, printed kimono featuring crochet detailing, and on-trend khaki slingbacks.

Chilling in cold shoulder chic

Gingham tapered trousers are great for making a cool style statement when you’re doing something chilled but you want to feel comfortable – and like you could be relatively active if push comes to shove. Add in a western boot, cold shoulder detailing, embroidery and a little colour-clashing, and you’ll be ticking off SS17 trends left, right and centre!

Step out in something seductive

You’ll really be channeling your inner Marilyn Monroe in this full layered skirt, so it’s perfect for a night out in town. Alluring lace offsets sweetly girlish frills and you can crank up the glam factor with an embellished clutch, metallic heels and a slightly gothic choker.

Babelicious Bardot

If your workplace dresscode is a little more lenient – we’re sure this is most places that don’t enforce suits and shirts – you’ll love this gingham top with Bardot neckline. It’s a little mischievous for a workday but sophisticated too, and it is muted enough to pair with the large florals in this pencil skirt, and bright pastels.

It’s so easy to introduce gingham print into your wardrobe when you know how, and it can really revolutionise a dull outfit that’s missing a little new-season something.
